About Us

Adelaide has hosted visiting Swamis of the Ramakrishna Mission since the late 1970s. Dr Janan and Padma Ishwaran were instrumental in initiating the first visit, and to this day, have been pillars for the growth of the Adelaide Vedanta Group. Swami Damodarananda started visiting Adelaide in 1978; at which point he established the Vedanta Society of Adelaide, a non-office bearing Society. He continued to visit Adelaide and as did many others; Swami Ranganathananda, Swami Bhuteshananda and Pravrajika Ajayaprana - to name a few.

While the growth of Vedanta movement in Adelaide has been slow but steady, the growth in Sydney has been rather rapid. In October 2000, the Trustees of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math (India) deputed Swami Sridharananda to take charge of the Sydney Centre, which was declared to be an official branch of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission of India. In 2001, at the invitation of the Iswaran family, Swami Sridharananda started visiting Adelaide once every two months to hold classes on the Bhagavad Gita. Swamiji now visits Adelaide for three days every month and holds classes.
